Halloween Spider Web Sight Word Game
In our search for fun Halloween activities and games, we stumbled across this adorable spider web sight word game created by Kristina of Toddler Approved. Isn't it fantastic?! Not only is it great for gross motor development - balancing on the skinny lines of the web is hard work! - it's also a fabulous way to build sight word recognition and vocabulary!
Here's the gist...
- Develop a list of sight words you wish to review and write a sentence using each sight word.
- Use word processing software to create sight word cards and paste each one onto a spider cutout. {We adore the paper plate spiders Kristina created! There are plenty of tutorials online if you wish to make your own...}
- Place 3 or 4 sight word spiders onto the web.
- Invite the first player to stand at one corner of the web. Read them a sentence, using one of the sight words on the web, and invite them to 'walk the lines of the web' to find the correct sight word spider. If they choose correctly, allow them to keep the cutout and replace it with another sight word spider. If their guess is incorrect, all spiders stay on the web and the player's turn is over. Invite the next player to stand on the web and repeat the same process.
As an alternative, you might consider combining the spider web sight word activity with fine motor development ~ drawing the spider web onto easel paper and inviting your students to spray the correct sight word spider with "bug spray" {i.e. a bottle filled with water!}.
