Crab: Egg Carton Sea Creatures Series
Pining for the ocean? Give your students this beach-worthy crab craft to work on from Sherri Osborn at About.com!
Supplies You'll Need
- Egg carton
- Red craft paint
- Kids paint brush
- Craft glue
- Red pipe cleaner
- Wiggle eyes
- Kids scissors
- Ruler
In preparation for the craft, use scissors to cut each individual egg 'cup' from the carton. Trim the edges so you get a nice even, round shape. You'll need one cup for each student completing the craft.
To begin the project, provide your students with a shallow dish of red paint and a paint brush, instructing them to paint their egg cup and set aside to dry. As the crab 'body' is drying, provide your students with 2 pipe cleaners. Invite them to get out their rulers and cut the stems in the following sizes and quantities:
- Eight 1 1/2-inch pieces
- Two 8-inch pieces
- Two 1/2-inch pieces
Next, have your students use craft glue to attach the cut pipe cleaners to the dry egg cup. The eight 1 1/2-inch pieces will be attached to the sides (4 on each) for legs. The two 8-inch pieces should then be bent into claws and glued to the front edge. Lastly, poke the 1/2-inch pieces through the cup where the eyes should go (gluing on the inside to anchor them to the cup) then glue wiggle eyes to the ends of the protruding pipe cleaners.
A fun way to bring the ocean to your classroom!
