We're Going to the Zoo! - Unit Activities & Lapbook
Ami Brainerd has put together a wonderful set of activities {and the printables that go along with them} at Homeschool Share to help your kiddos learn about the animals that can be found at the zoo! Based on a fantastic list of zoo literature, students will love reading the books as a class and completing the various exercises that go along with them. This multi-book theme unit features various lapbook exercises as well as individual activities for you to choose from. The best part is, Ami provides the answer keys to each exercise so they truly require little work on your part!
Example Activity: {Occupations} Zookeeper
After reading Mary Jean Hendrick's If Anything Ever Goes Wrong at the Zoo, invite your kiddos to think about the different duties performed by a zookeeper.
- They train animals in order to take care of them better. For example, zookeepers train grizzly bears to stick their long claws through the fence so that they can be cut and shaped {for safety purposes}.
- They feed the animals.
- Zookeepers maintain the animals' living spaces - clearing out waste, cleaning up unsafe debris, etc.
After brainstorming a list of zookeeper duties, have students use Ami's "Zookeeper Hot Dog Book" printable {pictured above right} to record each of them using drawings and simple sentences.
Be sure to visit Homeschool Share for this and many other fantastic zoo activities/printables!
