Substitute Preparation
No teacher is infallible so it's best to be prepared for the eventuality of school days missed. Part of each year's summer classroom preparation should include the creation of a substitute teacher folder or binder. This informational packet should include class lists, daily schedules, seating charts, classroom rules, emergency drill information, tips for classroom procedures, directions for finding all the necessary supplies and teaching materials, and any other information you think the substitute teacher might find helpful. You may want to also check out our selection of substitute teacher books. Additionally, keep several well-documented lesson plans for days you may be absent, extra worksheets or handouts in case the class finishes early, a list of approved classroom games, and instructions for popular classroom activities. While you'll never be able to foresee the exact dates, being prepared for the inevitable will allow a much smoother transition for the substitute teacher, as well as, your subsequent return.
On the flip side, it's important for substitute teachers to be prepared as well. Michael Young, author and Suite101 contributor, has written a fantastic article on substitute teaching strategies. Be sure to check it out!
