Celebrate The Olympics
The Olympic games not only stand for unrivaled athleticism, but unity and peace. As eighty-two countries come together to participate in the 2010 Winter Olympics, take advantage of a great opportunity to teach your students about the true spirit of the event. Supplement classroom discussions about diversity and hope with fun crafts and activities inspired by the games themselves. Hold fun contests that incorporate vocabulary words, math problems, and other interesting material being discussed in the unit. Coordinate with other teachers and your physical education instructor to create an obstacle course in the gym for students to compete as teams. Collect craft time materials for children to create their own opening ceremony torches, medals, and Olympic symbols. The creator of "No Time For Flash Cards" offers some wonderful craft ideas including 3D Olympic rings and torch. However you decide to celebrate, make sure your students understand the unique spirit of the Olympic games.
