Comparing Piggy Literature

Kick off your piggy folk tale unit by reading different versions of The Three Little Pigs and inviting your students to draw and write about their favorite.

Here are just a few versions you might consider;

• The Three Little Pigs by Paul Galdone
• The Three Little Pigs Paperback by Steven Kellogg
• The Three Little Pigs (Disney Classic) by RH Disney
• The 3 Little Pigs by Edda Reinl
• The Three Pigs by David Wiesner; and for fun
• The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka

Once you've selected three or four versions, read one a day, discussing how each successive book compares to the version your kiddos have heard before as well as the books you've read as a class. After all versions have been read, let the drawing and writing begin!

Piggy Collaborative Writing

Whether you plan to read one version of the tale or four, select a book that you kiddos can work together to summarize. Collaborative writing is an excellent way to build and polish writing skills, while also providing an opportunity for students to learn about the give and take of sharing ideas.

Extension: Along with a summary, you could also have your kiddos brush up on the elements of a story; organizing their information to reveal character, setting, conflict, plot and theme.

Piggy Storytelling

We love this piggy storytelling basket created by Catherine of Sun Hats & Wellie Boots! Use the props as you read the tale for the first time, or simply set it out as a way for students to retell the story later!

Piggy Rap

Music is always a fun and engaging way to learn! The talented Debbie Clement wrote a "Piggy Rap" that you should definitely consider checking out and including in your lesson plans!! You can find more information over at Rainbows Within Reach.

Construction Paper Piggys

No directions needed! Simply provide your kiddos with three pink construction paper circles, construction paper scraps in various colors, and craft markers - and let them have a ball creating their very own piggys!

Milk Carton Houses

Another great storytelling tool or simple art-literature connection, invite your students to use milk cartons, paper plates, construction paper, and markers to create the three little pigs' houses! Each side of the milk carton has a different decoration - the front displays a copy of the book cover, the first side is decorated with 'straw', the third side is decorated with 'sticks', and the fourth side is decorated with 'brick'!
