Mary Ann Mulroe, librarian at Heritage Middle School in Lansing, IL recently submitted several fantastic bulletin board designs – this one included – that would add a touch of color and thematic fun to your classroom this spring and summer! We just love this adorable campfire/s'more themed design! While originally created as a window display, we think it can be turned into a wall display with relative ease and be tailored to fit your classroom needs.

Mary Ann used the display to feature the year’s Rebecca Caudill Award nominees, but you could also try one of the following ideas...
  • Use the board to display student recommendations for summer reading.
  • Keeping with a similar theme, invite your kiddos to do a "s'more" book report {i.e. write a brief discussion of the characters, thematic events, symbols, etc. on the graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow cutouts}, arranging the finished products on the bulletin board for their classmates to peruse - "S'more Great Books!"
  • Give your classroom helpers board a summer 'face-lift', displaying the various job titles on the graham cracker/chocolate cutouts and assigning duties by adding marshmallow cutouts that have student names scripted on them - "S'more Fantastic Helpers!"

These are just a few ideas - there are obviously many more applications for this bulletin board - it just depends on what your needs are!

S'more Books for Summer Bulletin Board Display

  • Background: Light colored bulletin board paper.
  • Title: "S'more Books for Summer!" - or another title that fits your needs. We love how Mary Ann replaced all of the o's in the title with cutesy marshmallow cutouts to go along with the theme!
  • Border: Complimentary solid color trimmer.
  • Decoration: 1) The S'mores. Here's how Mary Ann created the accents...

"The s'mores are made with clipart of chococlate and graham crackers [printed onto card stock and] glued to cardboard, and soft white craft foam for the marshmallows."

    2) The Campfire. Cover paper towel rolls with brown tissue paper or bulletin board paper to create three-dimensional logs for the fire. To add a more realistic feel, use a brown or black marker to add bark detailing on the logs and arrange them in a 'pile' at the bottom of the bulletin board. Add 'flames' using red, orange, and yellow tissue paper. When put together, the overall 3D effect is pretty cool!
